Questions and Answers on LASIK

LASIK, which stands for Laser Assisted In-Situ Keratomileusis, is laser surgery which can correct nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. Over 90 percent of patients who undergo LASIK vision correction achieve 20/40 vision or better without glasses. Laser refractive surgery was developed in 1987. The FDA approved the use of the excimer laser in 1995. Following are the most commonly asked questions about LASIK:

What is LASIK?
LASIK combines the excimer laser with an automated scalpel called a microkeratome, which cuts a hinged flap in the anterior cornea. The flap is lifted and the excimer laser treatment is applied to the exposed underlying cornea. The laser reduces the corneal thickness by a few microns, thus slightly flattening the curvature in treating nearsightedness. The hinged flap is then closed like a trap door, protecting the underlying treated tissue.

Who is the ideal candidate for LASIK?
Any adult who wears corrective lenses for nearsightedness or farsightedness and whose eyes are in good general health is a potential candidate. Astigmatism can also be corrected at the same time.

Is LASIK painful?
There may be some momentary discomfort when the microkeratome is applied to the eye, but the laser treatment itself is completely painless. After surgery, a clear plastic shield is placed over the operated eye(s) and worn overnight for protection. Since the outer surface of the cornea is relatively undisturbed, most eyes are completely comfortable.

Where is the surgery performed?
The surgery is performed in the Microsurgical Suite of the Academy of Laser Vision Sciences, 901 So Mopac, Bldg 4, Ste. 350, Austin, Texas, 78746.

What happens during surgery?
The actual surgery takes only a few minutes; however plan to be at the laser center for about one and one half hours. When you arrive, we will obtain a final topographical map of your corneal surface. We will then give you a mild sedative by mouth and apply ophthalmic anesthetic drops to your eyes. You'll walk into the laser room and sit in a special reclining chair beneath the laser microscope. Your eyelids will be parted gently with a lid speculum. The microkeratome will be applied to your eye and the hinged flap will be created in approximately 30 seconds. The laser treatment will be applied for less than 60 seconds. The flap will then be closed over the treated area. The treated eye will be temporarily patched and the other eye will then be treated in the same manner. Antibiotic and anti-inflammatory eye drops will be instilled and your eyes will then be protected with clear plastic shields that will be worn overnight. Since you will still be under the influence of the mild sedative, you should be aware that it may affect your balance.

When can I go back to work and when can I drive?
Everyone heals at a different rate, but most individuals can drive and return to work in one or two days.

Will I be able to see better immediately?
Most patients see better immediately, however, there is some visual blurring and some fluctuation of vision for several days and occasionally for several weeks. Your vision may continue to improve for several months.

Can my vision be 20/20 after surgery?
Yes. It can be 20/20. Current available studies show that 90-95% of patients see 20/40 or better, which is legal driving vision. Some people with high levels of nearsightedness are happy to lower their lens prescription; some find they only need glasses for certain activities and others have eliminated the need for their glasses altogether.
