Dr. Vendal is a board certified eye physician and surgeon who is a Diplomate of the American Board of Ophthalmology. She specializes in glaucoma treatment, cataract surgery, prelex, laser vision correction, and comprehensive eye care.
Dr. Vendal grew up in Plano, Texas with her father, an executive at an engineering firm, her mother, a retired professor of sociology, and her sister, Sarah. She attended the University of Texas at Austin and received her B.A. in biology in 1996. At UT, she was consistently on the Deans Honer Roll and served in the premedical honor society, Alpha Epsilon Delta.
Dr. Vendal then attended medical school at UT Health Science Center - San Antonio. During the course of her studies, she received several Lions Research scholarships to perform vision research and won various awards for her research presentations on macular degeneration. She went on the complete her internship in medicine at University of North Carolina hospitals at Chapel Hill and her residency in ophthalmology at Penn State University.
As a resident, Dr. Vendal originated a community eye screening at the Bethesda Homeless Mission which now occurs on an annual basis in Harrisburg, PA. She also received a travel grant from National Eye Institute to present her ongoing reserach in Retinopathy of Prematurity at the annual Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology meeting. Her department honored her two years in a row for the best resident research.
In 2004, Dr. Vendal was accepted to Harvard Medical School's prestigious Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary for subspecialty training in glaucoma treatment and again won accolades for her research in low-tension glaucoma at the New England Ophthalmological Society. Throughout her entire professional career, her priority has been her patients, and she strives to make their experience a positive one.
Dr. Vendal is married to Dr. Mustasim Rumi who is a board certificed orthopedic spine surgeon and they have one son Amaan. Her clinical interests include glaucoma, glaucoma surgery, cataract surgery, and refractive surgery. Her research interest are in low-tension glaucoma, and her published works include macular degeneration, retinopathy of prematurity, and juvenile xanthogranuloma.
When not at work, Dr. Vendal loves to travel and she is involved with the Austin Lyric Opera. She and her son attend Music Together classes at the Armstrong Community Music School.
