Dr. Sue Ellen Young is a native Texan, born in Port Arthur where her father practiced medicine for 53 years and her mother was an R.N. She graduated in Plan II (Liberal Arts) with honors from the University of Texas at Austin.
She received her medical training at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston with an ophthalmology residency at University of Texas Medical Branch in Houston. She gained specialized training in neuro-ophthalmology and ophthalmic plastic surgery at the Johns Hopkins Hospital, Wilmer Eye Institute, in Baltimore and ocular oncology at Columbia Presbyterian in New York City. She was appointed to the medical staff at M.D. Anderson Hospital in Houston, where she served as Chief of Ophthalmology for seven years.
Since 1981, Dr. Young has been in private practice in Austin, most recently forming a partnership with her husband, Dr. Guy E. Knolle, Jr., in 1997. She serves as the ophthalmologist for the UT female athletes and is a mentor for Plan II pre-med students at the University of Texas. She serves as a consultant for the Texas State Board of Medical Examiners and the Texas Medical Liability Trust. Dr. Young has been an active member of various local, state and national medical and scientific associations. She is past president of the Austin Ophthalmology Society and Texas Ophthalmological Association, and has served on the executive board of the Travis County Medical Society. In 1990, she received the American Academy of Ophthalmology Honor Award for her contribution towards educating other ophthalmologists.
Her top notch clinical skills and warm bedside manner have earned her annual peer recognition in “Best Doctors of America” and “Top Ophthalmologists of America” since 1996. Additionally, she has been selected to appear in Texas Monthly Magazine as one of the “Super Docs of Texas”, Dec, 2004, 2005.
Her hobbies include horseback riding and all water sports, including trick water skiing. As a Port Arthuran, she claims webbed feet! She loves to travel. Among her favorite foreign experiences was in Kenya, E. Africa, where she performed cataract surgery as part of a medical missionary group. She returned several years later to join a group from Bat Conservation International to explore the caves of bats and their habitats. She now travels with her husband in his Beechcraft Bonanza A36TC to out-of-the-way places in North America and Mexico. This gives her ample opportunity to expand her growing photographic library. When at home, she loves to cook, an inherited trait she claims from her mother. She is an avid animal lover and actively supports many animal causes. As an ex-French horn player with the Beaumont Symphony Orchestra, she now enjoys music as an ardent listener. |
